Hall of fame moments

It's big, loud and also entertaining and the blu-ray is a complete package with great audio, video and extras. Check out this scene from Transformers. Click on image to enlarge.

Happy Feet is a perfect animated movie. It blends together great animation, sound and music and a great story. Some of the animation is so good it looks real and there is some live action incorporated as well. Click on image to enlarge.

This film, Apocalypto, really engages the viewer and from the start, we are on Jaguar Paw's side. Naturally this blu-ray transfer looks great in 1080p and sounds great too in full blown pcm 5.1 audio. Click on image to enlarge.

The new king of animation on disk goes to Cars, a movie and blu-ray with unsurpassed detail and great sound as well. If you don't believe me, check out the beginning race for audio and the scene above for video. Click on image to enlarge.

The Pixar film, Ratatouille, has  unsurpassed level of detail that matches that of Cars (above). No other animated films seem to match the Pixar films in this respect. Click on image to enlarge.

I don't know how they did it but Open Season on blu-ray is more 3-dimensional than any animation I have seen before. Click on image to enlarge.

Movie Moments (Page 2)

These are a few of my favourite scenes on disk. The screen shots were taken from the main seating position using a digital camera.

.. ..

The first image is from Spider-Man and the film is a nice blend of live action and cgi. I love comic book adaptations and this first film of the trilogy tells the story of the rise of this superhero. Pan's Labyrinth is a fairy tale for adults. This film which is totally in Spanish has a kick-butt soundtrack using dts-HD master lossless audio in no less than 7.1 channels which not only reproduces the bombastic moments but handles the quiet ambience and surrounds perfectly. Ice Age 2: The Meltdown has great visual effects and builds on the story of our favourite sabor-toothed squirrel, Scrat.

  .. ..

The above 3 images are from The Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Surfs Up respectively. The Corpse Bride disk is a perfect reproduction of this stop-frame technology movie and it is actually refreshing to see this type of animation. It's predecessor was The Nightmare Before Christmas, a musical with an old-fashioned flavor. Each re-incarnation has come with better audio and video from the time the first DVD came out and this blu-ray disk tops them all. Finally, Surfs Up is an animated film with a great colour palette and is a visual treat, pretty to look at in other words.

.. ..

300 is in a genre of film that I personally like, animation being another category that I like. The middle image is one of my personal favorite comic book adaptations. I love the way Batman Begins creates the superhero and shows us his origins. The disk itself provides us with the audio in Dolby TrueHD. The music score adds a lot to the film as well. The Dark Knight is a very enjoyable sequel but a lot of credit goes to this character, The Joker, played by the now deceased Heath Leger.

  .. ..

Each time I watch I, Robot, I feel the same rush. Great video quality from Fox on this one which is better than every other live action film on blu-ray. Special effects galore, dts-HD master lossless audio and a great story. What else could you want? Iron Man is an intelligent superhero film with a hero that dishes it out. The right shot is from the Kung Fu Panda blu-ray. This is one funny film. I love kung-fu films and this one nailed it and has great animation.

.. ..

Who would have ever guessed that a ride at one of Disney's theme parks would be the basis of one of the most successful movie trilogies of all time. Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl is entertaining, great to look at and to listen to as well. Throw in the fantastic musical score and performances of its characters and you have a winner folks. The video quality gets better with each release. Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest has one of the best pirate villains you will ever see. Davy Jones (shown here) should win the award for best makeup or something. Our favorite captain, Jack Sparrow, is trying to get himself out of a pickle which he usually manages to do somehow here in Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End. All 3 films feature pcm5.1 audio.

.. ..

Speed is one of the best action films ever made. The action begins from the very start and does not let up, even when you think all is done. Spider-Man 2 might very well be the best comic book adaptation for many people. It has the villain you see here, Doc Oc, while Spider-Man 3 has at least 2 or more bad guys. Spider-Man 3 is at the top of the list for video quality and audio as well. In this case, Sony uses pcm 5.1 to reproduce the bombastic soundtrack.

.. ..

"Do you know what you have done?" This new director's cut of Troy on blu-ray adds a lot to the theatrical cut and this disk has more natural colours, better video and audio as well and with 50GB of disk space, it shows. Wall.E continues Pixar's dominance in animation. Somehow they bring us into the world of their characters and allow us to feel what they feel. They do so with a level of detail above all other animated films and sound to match. Sunshine is a film I enjoyed each time I watched it. The bass in this film is deep, the highs are crisp and the surround activity pulls you into the film. "Adjust room filter to 2.6%".
